Finding time to exercise in the morning before you tackle the day can often be a challenge. One thing which I have started doing instead is stretching. There are a number of benefits of stretching in the morning and ever since I have incorporated this into my morning routine, I have started to appreciate them. Let’s take a look at some of these benefits:
1. Fewer aches and pains
Aches and pains can occur at any point during the day. However, studies show that they occur more frequently in the morning. The reason they usually occur in the morning is because the body has been at rest for a long period of time and increased fluids find their way into joints and discs. Morning stretches can be a great way to eliminate aches and pains in muscles and joints.
2. Mental focus
One of the biggest benefits of stretching in the morning in my opinion is mental rather than physical. I have found that when I spend five to ten minutes in the morning stretching with some peaceful music in the background, it helps me get into the right mindset for the day ahead. Often people will wake up and be rushing around before they go to work, but by taking 5-10 minutes out to relax and stretch, your mind will be at peace as well as your body.
3. Improvement in posture
Many people that work at desks often do a lot of damage to their back and chest without realising. Sometimes it can take a few years before you realise the stress you have put on your back and chest due to your posture at your desk. One of the benefits of stretching in the morning is that you can open up your chest and back muscles to improve flexibility and also posture. After you have done these stretches a few times, an improvement in posture will become noticeable.
4. Injury prevention
You may have read our recent article on how to prevent injuries, which included a paragraph on the importance of stretching. If you have quite an active lifestyle and you’re always doing some form of exercise, then the last thing you want is an injury. By stretching in the morning you will help your muscles loosen up and improve flexibility. One thing which I loved when I started doing morning stretches is the feeling once I had finished; I felt so mobile!

As I mentioned earlier, I have been carrying out morning stretches for a while now and it has become part of my daily routine. Once you finish your stretching in the morning, you will feel like a new person with energy to conquer the day ahead. Honestly, it is a great feeling! There are a number of videos on YouTube which you can choose from. These range from stretches for beginners to more advanced ones. Start slow and work your way up.
