The brain is one complex organ. It is the nervous system’s command center and it is instrumental in helping us understand and relate with our environment. We do multiple tasks each day and this is where our cognitive function is being utilized. Whether we facilitate a business meeting or drive a car and do errands, we need our cognitive skills to be active so we remain focus and respond quickly. There are brain exercises that can positively influence one’s mental awareness however, this is not the only solution. Just as a healthy diet can improve your physical health, including the right foods can enhance your brain health as well.

1. Oily Fish
Do you know that 60% of the brain is fat? In fact, the organ is considered as the fattest organ of the body. Oily fish are rich in omega-3 fatty acids are needed in brain development. The increase in intake of foods that are high in omega-3s can lower the risk of dementia, Alzheimer’s disease and even depression and ADHD. It can also help improve the person’s ability to focus and learn. Try adding salmon, sardines or mackerel in your diet.
2. Blueberries
Blueberries are one of the healthiest options when it comes to fruit. Blueberries have the highest levels of antioxidants. These antioxidants are what the body needs in order to fight the free radicals from damaging the cell structures. Blueberries help in slowing down age-related cognitive problems such as dementia. Aside from promoting good brain health and function, the antioxidants also have a positive effect on one’s cardiovascular system, eye health and skin health.
3. Tomatoes
Tomatoes are known to be high in lycopene and beta-carotene, two other types of antioxidants. These antioxidants not only help combat cancer but they are essential in brain growth. It can prevent degenerative diseases of the brain such as Alzheimer’s, dementia and Parkinson’s.
4. Avocados
This superfood does a lot in keeping your brain healthy. It contains a significant amount of monounsaturated fats that help in protecting the nerve cells found in your brain. It promotes healthy blood flow in your body so can help prevent strokes. Avocados are known to improve one’s cognitive function.
5. Broccoli
Broccoli is a good source of choline which is essential in brain development. This can improve memory and one’s ability to learn. It is loaded with Vitamin C, which can boost your immune system and it is high in fibre so it makes you feel full quickly. This is perfect if you are trying to watch your weight.
6. Spinach
You may know that you should eat lots of spinach because of its health benefits. But did you know that it is also good for your brain? This nutritious leafy vegetable contains antioxidants that fights off the free radicals in our body that can potentially cause age-related mental deterioration. Spinach can improve your learning capacity and memory.
7. Egg Yolk
If you love eating eggs in the morning, don’t skip the egg yolk because it is the best source of choline, a macronutrient that is essential for brain development. Choline stimulates the production of Acetylcholine, an anti-aging neurotransmitter. For babies, it can prevent natural birth defects. Egg yolks are also rich in Vitamins B12 and D. Lack of these vitamins could lead to a decline in cognitive function.
8. Dark Chocolate
While most chocolate is unhealthy, there are some which are actually good for you. Dark chocolate in particular can be good for you and your memory. This treat contains a good amount of flavanol, an antioxidant which reduces the risk of high blood pressure and memory loss. In addition, it can even regulate your mood therefore preventing depression. Just remember to pick an organic, dark chocolate with at least 80% cocoa (the higher percentage of cocoa the better) content and keep yourself from overeating.

If you like to munch on these crunchy snacks then you are on the right track because nuts are good for your brain. Walnuts specifically are the best because they contain a higher amount of DHA. It is an omega-3 fatty acid that is known to protect the brain health of the babies and improve the cognitive skills of the adults. Next to walnuts are almonds and hazelnuts. These nuts are high in Vitamin E which can boost your memory.
10. Blackcurrant
Blackcurrants may not be as popular as the blueberries but they are still great for our brain health. This tart berry contains an antioxidant known as anthocyanin that can help in managing diseases such as Parkinson’s. The same antioxidant is also responsible for boosting the immune system.
11. Sage
We’ve known this herb to add flavor to different dishes but there is one thing that you should know. This herb contains antioxidants that can improve your memory, your comprehension and problem-solving skills.
